A lit “diya” or an earthen lamp specifically used while offering prayers or to symbolize any religious occasion is considered a sign of auspiciousness in India by the Hindu religion.

Not a measure of faith or devotion however a lit diya is considered divine and is always kept next to the idol of the Almighty while worshiping. The same is later bowed to while seeking blessings from the Almighty.

Homes and places are decorated with small earthen lamps during the festival of lights – Diwali, celebrated by the Hindu religion in India.
